Sherry and Annette

Who do you care for? What is your family situation?

I am a caregiver for my mother, Annette. I have 6 kids (ages, 43, 41, 39, 37, 34, 32) and 4 brothers.

When was your mother diagnosed?

My mother was diagnosed in 2011.

How long have you been a caregiver and how did you end up taking on this role?

In 2012 Mom sold her home and moved closer and in 2014 she came to live with me.

What has been most helpful to you during this time and how?

Mom's Geriatrician, Dr. Edid Romos and Friends Place Adult Day Services.

What has been the most challenging part of being a caregiver?

Getting some time to myself to meet with friends. Also, mom has expressive aphasia and it can be a struggle to find out her wants and needs.

Imagine that you've just met a person who's loved one just received their diagnosis yesterday. They are at Day 1 of this journey. What advice would you give them?

Find a good geriatrician who can give you a real prognosis and steps and a timeline.  Also, look for an adult daycare, support groups and assisted living when needed.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

I am so thankful to God that my daughters are available to give me an occasional break.
